J5 industrial variable reach truck training is the accredited course for operators who use a telehandler on hard standing: warehouse floors, factory units, distribution centres, concrete yards and loading bays. It gives your operators the skills, safety knowledge and nationally recognised certificate to operate an industrial telehandler safely, and it is the correct category whenever your machine works on concrete or tarmac rather than rough ground.
You may see it called a telehandler licence, but UK law does not require one. The correct qualification is a Certificate of Basic Training, issued after completing an accredited course.

A J5 industrial variable reach truck is a telescopic handler built for firm, level surfaces. Like the rough terrain J3 telehandler, it uses a telescopic boom that extends forwards and upwards, so the operator can place loads at height and reach beyond the machine’s footprint, something a masted forklift cannot do.
The difference is the chassis and the working environment. A J5 machine is designed for industrial premises, paved yards and warehouses rather than the mud, slopes and unmade ground found on construction sites. That makes J5 the right category for manufacturers, distribution and logistics centres, builders merchants and any business lifting heavy loads into racking, onto trailers or over obstacles on hard standing.
Following the ABA category changes of 19 January 2026, the former J4 category has merged into J5, so a J5 certificate now covers industrial variable reach operation without the old lift-height split.

Every J5 telescopic handler training course combines theory and practical training, assessed to national standards, so operators leave with both the knowledge and the practical skills to work safely and productively.
The course covers PUWER 1998, LOLER 1998, the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the HSE Approved Code of Practice L117, so operators understand their own legal responsibilities and the employer’s duty of care.

Course length depends on the accrediting body, the delegate’s experience and the group size (1:1, 2:1 or 3:1). As a guide, novice courses take three to six days, experienced operator courses two to three days and refresher courses half a day to one day. Conversion training is quoted individually.
