Articulated Dumper

Our accredited Articulated Dump Truck training is designed for operators working with large, off-road dump trucks on major construction sites, quarrying operations, civil engineering projects, and infrastructure works. Delivered by experienced instructors accredited by ITSSAR, AITT, and RTITB, our training equips operators with the knowledge and practical skills to operate an articulated dump truck safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with UK health and safety legislation.

Whether your operators are brand new to articulated dump trucks or experienced operators due a refresher, HL Training has a course to suit. Call 0117 952 5625 or complete the enquiry form below to book.

What is an Articulated Dump Truck?

An articulated dump truck (ADT) is a large, heavy-duty off-road vehicle designed for transporting and tipping bulk materials such as soil, rock, aggregates, and demolition waste across rough terrain. Unlike a rigid dump truck, the articulated dump truck has a pivot joint between the cab and the body — this articulation gives the machine exceptional manoeuvrability on soft ground, steep gradients, and uneven terrain where rigid vehicles cannot safely operate.

Articulated dump trucks are one of the most powerful and productive machines used on major construction, quarrying, mining, and infrastructure projects. They are capable of carrying exceptionally large payloads — often 25 tonnes or more — and are built to operate in the harshest site conditions. Their size, power, and operating environment make them one of the most demanding and high-risk machines to operate, making proper accredited training essential for every operator.

Due to the scale and complexity of articulated dump truck operation, training courses are significantly longer than those for smaller dumper categories, reflecting the additional knowledge, skill, and site awareness required.

Key Characteristics of the Articulated Dump Truck

  • Articulated steering: The pivot joint between the cab and body allows the machine to bend in the middle, giving it far superior manoeuvrability on soft ground, steep slopes, and tight turning areas compared to rigid dump trucks.
  • High payload capacity: Designed to carry very large volumes of material — often 25 tonnes or more per load — making them one of the most productive machines on major earthmoving and quarrying projects.
  • Off-road capability: Built specifically for rough, uneven, and soft terrain that would be impassable for standard road vehicles — including quarry floors, embankments, and waterlogged ground conditions.
  • Longest training duration: Due to the scale, power, and operating environment of articulated dump trucks, course durations are significantly longer than those for forward tipping dumpers — reflecting the greater skill and site awareness required.

What Is Included In The Training?

Our Articulated Dump Truck training is structured to ensure operators develop the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills required to work safely in demanding on and off-road environments. The course includes (but is not limited to):

  • Relevant health and safety legislation (LOLER 1998, PUWER 1998, HASAWA 1974)
  • Introduction to the articulated dump truck — cab controls, body mechanism, and safety systems
  • Pre-use inspection procedures and defect reporting
  • Understanding the articulation joint — steering, stability, and safe operating limits
  • Safe loading techniques — load distribution, capacity limits, and body positioning
  • Travelling safely on site — gradients, soft ground, pedestrian awareness, and site traffic management
  • Tipping safely — proximity to edges, embankments, and unstable ground conditions
  • Operating in adverse ground conditions — mud, water, and uneven terrain
  • Emergency procedures and incident reporting
  • Care and maintenance of articulated dump trucks

Training Course Requirements

Candidates, a suitable training area with appropriate terrain, and an articulated dump truck must be available for the full course duration. All candidates must actively participate in all elements of the course — including the pre-use check, theory assessment, and practical test — to receive their accredited certificate.

Our training can be tailored to the specific articulated dump truck your operators use on site and adapted to your ground conditions, haul routes, and site layout. Training is delivered at your site or at our Bristol training centre.

Why Complete This Training?

It is a legal requirement under PUWER 1998 for all operators to receive adequate training before using work equipment, including articulated dump trucks. Beyond compliance, there are significant benefits:

Legal Compliance: Training meets the requirements of PUWER 1998, LOLER 1998, and HASAWA 1974 — a legal obligation for all operators.

Reduced Accident Risk: Articulated dump trucks present serious risks including overturning on slopes, tipping near embankments, and collisions in high-traffic site environments. Trained operators are significantly safer.

Site Productivity: Competent ADT operators maximise haul cycle efficiency, load correctly, and make better decisions on difficult terrain.

Nationally Recognised Certificate: Operators receive an accredited certificate from ITSSAR, AITT, or RTITB upon successful completion.

Insurance and Audit Protection: Documented, accredited training protects your business during insurance renewals, HSE inspections, and principal contractor audits.

Where Is Training Delivered?

Our Articulated Dump Truck training is delivered nationwide. We offer fully mobile training, with our accredited instructors attending your site to deliver training on your own ADT and across your actual terrain and haul routes. Training on the operator’s own machine in their own environment is especially important for articulated dump truck training, given the site-specific nature of the work.

Alternatively, training can be arranged at our Bristol training centre for smaller groups. Contact us to discuss your requirements and we will put together the most suitable training plan for your team and site conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is articulated dump truck training accredited?

Yes. Our training is accredited by ITSSAR, AITT, and RTITB. Upon successful completion, operators receive a nationally recognised certificate confirming their competency on articulated dump trucks, accepted across the UK construction, quarrying, and civils industries.

What is the difference between an articulated dump truck and a forward tipping dumper?

An articulated dump truck is a large, off-road machine with a pivot joint between the cab and body, designed for major earthmoving, quarrying, and infrastructure projects. Forward tipping dumpers are smaller site-based machines used for shorter-range material transport on construction sites. All three categories require their own separate accredited training.

Why are articulated dump truck courses so much longer than other dumper courses?

Articulated dump trucks are significantly larger, more powerful, and more complex to operate than site dumpers. They are used in more demanding environments — quarries, major civil engineering sites, and rough terrain — and carry much greater payloads. The longer course durations reflect the additional skill, knowledge, and site awareness required.

How often should ADT operators undergo refresher training?

HSE guidance recommends safety refresher training approximately every 3–5 years. Refresher training should also be arranged following any incident or near-miss, a prolonged period away from operating the machine, or following significant changes to the site environment.

Can articulated dump truck training be delivered on our site?

Yes. We strongly recommend on-site delivery for ADT training wherever possible, as the machine’s operating characteristics are heavily influenced by site-specific terrain and conditions. Our instructors can attend your site and deliver training on your own trucks across your actual haul routes.
