Accredited Loading Shovel Training FAQs

Do I Need A License To Operate A Loading Shovel?

No. You do not need a loading shovel licence. In fact, they don’t exist. There are, however, several steps you will need to do to safely and legally be able to operate a loading shovel, including meeting some basic requirements and completing training. You can learn more about the requirements in our guide, “Do You Need a Forklift Licence? Spoiler: It Doesn’t Exist!”.

Where Are HL Training’s Loading Shovel Courses Delivered?

We can provide our training courses nationwide at a worksite of your choice. Alternatively, you can visit our Bristol training centre, which is complete with four training rooms and all the facilities required by our accrediting bodies.

How Often Are Refresher Courses Required?

Refresher courses are not a legal requirement, as your accredited certificate does not expire. However, HSE recommends refresher courses are carried out every 3 – 5 years.

All our training is ITSSAR, RTITB, and AITT accredited and can be carried out at your preferred location. Our expert instructors cover the length and breadth of the UK, providing you with truly national coverage.

What Our Digger Training Course Includes

On completion of training, the operators will have covered the following:

  • Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Operating Safety Rules
  • Mobility and Stability
  • Refuelling & Parking
  • Use of Shovel Bucket & Attachments
  • Use of Excavator
  • Stockpiling
  • Trenching
  • Pre-use checks test

FAQs

Here are some frequently asked questions.

How long does the 180 Excavator training course take to complete?

We offer three different versions of our digger training course depending on your level of experience. You can sign up for either our novice course (5 days), experienced course (3 days), or our refresher course (1 day). Some candidates may require additional training to the recommended guidelines.

How often should I refresh my training?

This is down to whether you or your employer feels you need to refresh your skills. It is not a legal requirement to undertake additional training. However, the HSE recommended guidelines are that operators complete refresher training every 3-5 years.

What qualifications do you need to drive a digger?

Some companies require candidates to have a CSCS card in order use their 180 Excavator qualification on certain sites.

360 Excavator Training

There are two types of excavators, of which we have a vast amount of experience training – the wheeled (rubber duck) excavator and the tracked (draglines) excavator.

Excavators must only be operated by fully trained, competent operators – who, in addition, have been given the authorisation to use. Any operation should follow a suitable risk assessment.

We offer ITSSAR accredited training, which can be carried out at customer locations across the UK. All our training is ITSSAR, RTITB, and AITT accredited.

Our Digger Training Course Includes:

  • Induction & Relevant Regulations (LOLER 1998, PUWER 1998 & HASAWA 1974)
  • How rated capacities, load radius & elevation of the load affect the lifting capacity
  • Basic Steering, Moving & Stopping
  • Grading & Screeding
  • Preparing for Transport
  • Manoeuvring on inclines or ramps
  • The differences between various lifting accessories or machine attachments (where required)
  • Pre-use check test
  • Theory test
  • Practical test
  •

THREE THINGS TO REMEMBER :

The excavator must NOT be operated outside of its capabilities. If you are in doubt, contact the machine manufacturer or call our office for any reason to discuss.

The manufactures recommended bucket size must NOT be exceeded.

When the load radius and elevation increase, or depending on the type of material, the lifting capacity could decrease.

A NOTE TO EMPLOYERS

Please remember to ensure you supervise any successful candidates considering their strengths and weaknesses in their training reports. In addition, if the training was NOT carried on the equipment they will be regularly using, ensure appropriate familiarisation training is given depending on the specific job.

What is a Slinger Signaller?

A Slinger Signaller plays a crucial role on a construction site. Their main purpose is to safely direct crane operators to load, transport and unload items. Essentially, they are the eyes and ears of crane operators who may have an obstructed view. You must have good observation skills and concentration to perform this role, as you have to be aware of your surroundings to ensure the safety of yourself, the operator and other employees on the site.

Is Slinger Signaller Training Compulsory?

Slinger Signaller training is not compulsory under laws and regulations, but we do recommend anyone wanting to become a slinger signaller take a specialist Slinger Signaller course to ensure they have a deep understanding of what is expected of them and how to carry out their role safely. We offer training for any experience level, including Novice, Existing and Refresher, to ensure all trainees have the same level of training once they complete the course.

Slinger Signaller Course Content

Slinger Signallers are highly valued by employers as they have a lot of responsibility and there is a high level of risk involved in their role.
