Our accredited H2 Pedestrian Operated Tow Tractor and Trailer training is designed for operators who walk alongside the vehicle while guiding it through warehouses, production facilities, and distribution centres. Delivered by experienced, accredited instructors and recognised by ITSSAR, AITT, and RTITB, our H2 training equips operators with the knowledge and practical skills to handle a pedestrian-operated tow tractor safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with UK health and safety legislation.
Whether your operators are new to pedestrian tow tractors or experienced operators due a refresher, HL Training has an H2 course to suit. To find out more or book training, call 0117 952 5625 or complete the enquiry form below.
The H2 is the ABA category for the pedestrian-operated tow tractor and trailer. Unlike an H1 rider-operated tow tractor where the operator rides the vehicle, an H2 operator walks alongside or behind the machine, steering it using a tiller arm or handle while guiding it through the facility. This makes the H2 particularly well suited to environments with tighter spaces, lower speed requirements, or operations where the operator needs to stay close to the load at all times.
H2 pedestrian tow tractors are commonly found in manufacturing, assembly, and retail logistics environments, often used on production lines, in picking areas, or for short-distance internal deliveries where a rider-operated vehicle would be impractical. Their compact footprint and low operating speed make them ideal for environments where pedestrian traffic is high.
H2 training focuses specifically on the characteristics of pedestrian-operated towing, including tiller control, trailer management, spatial awareness, and safe operating techniques in pedestrian-heavy environments.
The H2 is part of the ABA’s H group, the dedicated category set for tow tractors and trailers. All three H categories require separate accredited training:
The key distinction between H1 and H2 is how the operator interacts with the vehicle. H1 is rider-operated; H2 is pedestrian-operated. Operators trained on one category who need to use the other will require a separate accredited qualification for that category — the two certificates are not interchangeable.
Our H2 training is structured to ensure every operator develops the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills required to operate a pedestrian tow tractor safely and in compliance with all relevant UK legislation. The course includes (but is not limited to):
H2 course timings vary depending on the accrediting body and the candidate-to-instructor ratio. Timings are available for Novice (NOV), Experienced (EXP), and Refresher (REF) operators across AITT, ITSSAR, and RTITB accreditation.
All course timings are based on a maximum 3:1 candidate-to-instructor ratio.

It is a legal requirement under PUWER 1998 for all operators to have received adequate training before using work equipment, including pedestrian-operated tow tractors. Beyond the legal obligation, properly trained H2 operators deliver meaningful benefits to your business:
Our H2 tow tractor training is delivered nationwide. We offer fully mobile training, with our expert instructors attending your site to deliver training on your own equipment and within your actual working environment — whether that’s a manufacturing facility, a distribution centre, or a retail logistics operation.
Training can also be arranged at our Bristol training centre for individuals or smaller groups who cannot host on-site sessions. Whichever option suits your business, HL Training will work with you to put together the most practical and effective training plan for your team. Contact us to discuss your requirements.
Yes. All of our H2 training courses are accredited by ITSSAR, AITT, or RTITB. Upon successful completion, operators receive a nationally recognised certificate confirming their H2 competency, accepted across UK industry.
H2 covers pedestrian-operated tow tractors, where the operator walks alongside the machine using a tiller arm. H1 covers rider-operated tow tractors, where the operator sits or stands on the vehicle. Both are separate ABA categories with their own distinct training requirements and certification — an H1 certificate does not cover H2 operation, and vice versa.
HSE guidance recommends refresher training approximately every 3–5 years. Refresher training should also be considered following any incident or near-miss, after an extended period away from operating the equipment, or when significant changes have been made to the working environment or the equipment in use.
Yes. We offer fully mobile training and can attend your site to deliver H2 training using your own pedestrian tow tractor and within your actual operating environment. This is often the most practical and cost-effective option, particularly where multiple operators need to be trained.
Each accrediting body has its own verification system — ITSSAR uses a TOPS number, AITT uses an ACORNS number, and RTITB uses a NORS number. All can be verified directly with the relevant accrediting body using the unique ID number printed on the operator’s certificate.
We combine thorough curriculums with the best training methods from certified instructors. Whether your operators are brand new to pedestrian tow tractors or experienced operators due a refresher, we have an accredited H2 course to suit. Training delivered at your site or at our Bristol training centre.
