We have qualified instructors on site – training your team on the correct trucks they use every day.
For example, a 3-day counterbalance novice course follows a structured format: Day 1 covers health and safety legislation, truck components, and pre-use inspection procedures. Days 2 and 3 focus on practical operation safe manoeuvring, stacking and destacking at height, working in aisles, and developing awareness of pedestrians. The course concludes with both a theory and practical test.
Refresher training is essential for certified operators whose certification is approaching expiry or who haven’t operated a truck regularly. HSE guidance recommends forklift refresher courses approximately every 3 to 5 years, though more frequent refreshers may be needed after accidents, near misses, or extended breaks from operation.
Rather than waiting for a problem to occur, scheduling regular refresher courses keeps your team sharp and your compliance records current.
Conversion training allows operators already certified on one truck type to add new skills for a different machine. This is common when businesses expand their equipment fleet or when operators move between roles. For instance, an operator certified on a counterbalance forklift might need conversion training to operate a reach truck, pivot steer (Bendi), or telescopic materials handler.
Conversion courses typically take 1–2 days per new truck type, depending on the operator’s existing experience and the complexity of the machine. Courses can be tailored for groups of operators with similar ability to ensure effective learning and efficient instruction. Candidates must present their current valid certificate before starting.
Our ID cards are now digital, meaning they do not expire and are automatically updated with all training undertaken. Verify at any time: hltraining.co.uk/hlts-id-card-checker. This certification provides evidence that employers have fulfilled their duty under LOLER & PUWER.
Open course dates are published regularly, with small class sizes ensuring quality instruction. Short-notice bookings are possible when spaces are available.
Truck type | Common Applications |
|---|---|
Counterbalance | General warehouse work, loading bays, manufacturing |
Reach Truck | High racking in narrow aisle warehouses, distribution centres |
Pivot Steer / Bendi | Very narrow aisles, maximising storage density |
Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) | High-density storage, order picking in logistics hubs |
Telescopic Materials Handler | Construction sites, rough terrain applications |
Low Level Order Picker (LLOP) | Retail warehouses |
Powered Pallet Truck | Loading docks, short-distance horizontal transport |
Under PUWER 1998 and LOLER 1998, every forklift operator must hold adequate accredited training. Our courses ensure full compliance — and the documentation to prove it.
UK employers have a legal obligation to ensure anyone operating work equipment receives adequate training. Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), this means forklift operators must be trained in the skills needed for the specific trucks they use, the risks involved, and the precautions required. Lifting operations must also comply with LOLER 1998.
Our forklift training courses are designed for all skill levels, from complete novices to experienced operators in need of a refresher course or a conversion course for a new type of forklift truck. Each training course is led by qualified instructors with extensive industry experience, and our candidate training ratio is kept low to guarantee plenty of hands-on practical training with actual equipment. This approach allows us to deliver training that is both comprehensive and tailored to the needs of each trainee, ensuring everyone receives the attention and support they need to succeed.
