What is an M3 Multidirectional Pedestrian Reach Truck?

The M3 is the ABA category for the rider-operated multidirectional reach truck – a specialist machine designed to handle long, bulky loads in narrow aisle environments where a standard reach truck cannot operate effectively. Where a standard D category reach truck can only travel forwards and backwards, the M3 can travel in four directions, eliminating the need to pivot or reposition when working in tight spaces.

The M3 is most commonly associated with Combilift-type machines and similar multidirectional rider reach trucks. Its ability to carry long loads sideways through narrow aisles makes it an essential piece of equipment in timber yards, steel stockholders, and high-density warehousing operations.

What Makes the M3 Different from a Standard Reach Truck?

  • Multidirectional movement: The M3 can travel forwards, backwards, left, and right a standard D category reach truck can only travel forwards and backwards
  • Switch mechanism: Press the directional control once to select forwards/backwards movement; press it again to switch into left/right (sideways) mode.
  • Narrow aisle design: Specifically engineered for narrow aisle operations where there is no room for the truck to pivot or turn around.
  • Otherwise identical to A7: Apart from the multidirectional feature, the M4 operates in exactly the same way as a standard counterbalance truck.

M3 Category — Where It Sits in the ABA Framework

The M3 is part of the ABA’s M group — a dedicated set of categories for multidirectional trucks. Each M category covers a different machine type, and all require separate accredited training. The full range of multidirectional categories our courses cover includes:

  • M1 – Rider Operated Multidirectional Forklift
  • M2 – Rider Operated Multidirectional Sideloader
  • M3 – Rider Operated Multidirectional Reach Truck (this page)
  • M4 – Pedestrian Operated Multidirectional Reach Truck

The M3 requires its own dedicated qualification because its multidirectional capability and long load handling characteristics make it significantly different to operate safely compared to a standard D category rider reach truck.

What Is Included In The M3 Training?

Like all of our courses, the M3 training is in-depth to provide you with the necessary expertise and competence to safely and efficiently operate an M3 multidirectional reach truck. This course includes (but is not limited to):

  • Regulations and legislation (including LOLER 1998, PUWER 1998, and HASAWA 1974)
  • Introduction to the M3 truck and its multidirectional controls
  • Understanding the switch mechanism (forwards/backwards vs left/right mode)
  • Narrow aisle and confined space operating techniques
  • Safe handling of long and oversized loads
  • Capacity plates and load centre management
  • Stability and safe operating limits
  • Operating with 4-way directional steer
  • Working with racking and free-standing stacks in narrow aisle environments
  • Care and maintenance of M3 multidirectional reach trucks

M3 Training Course Requirements

Candidates, a suitable training and test room, and an appropriate M3 multidirectional reach truck must be available for the entire course duration.

All candidates are expected to be willing to learn all aspects of the training course, including taking part in the pre-check, theoretical, and practical tests required to receive their accredited M3 certificate.

Our M3 training courses can be tailored to the specific truck your operators use and made job-specific. Once training has concluded, candidates will have the skills and knowledge needed to safely control and handle an M3 multidirectional reach truck in their own work environment.

M3 Training Course Timings

At HL Training, we appreciate that each trainee will have different levels of experience operating an M3 multidirectional reach truck. This is why we offer three course types that can be tailored to meet your individual needs.

All course timings are based on a 3:1 candidates to instructor ratio.

Novice Operator: An individual with little or no experience operating an M3 or multidirectional reach truck. The course accepts up to 3 candidates at a time and runs for 5 days.

Experienced Operator: An individual with relevant experience operating a standard reach truck but no formal M3 training. This course accepts up to 3 candidates at a time and runs for 3 days. Further training may be recommended if candidates do not reach the required standard.

Refresher Operator: For operators who have held their M3 certificate for over 3 years and require a knowledge and skill refresher. This course accepts up to 3 candidates at a time and runs for 1 day.

Why You Should Complete an M3 Training Course

It is a legal requirement to have received adequate training before operating an M3 multidirectional reach truck. All operators must have the knowledge and practical skillset to operate the truck safely. There are many benefits to completing an accredited M3 course:

Safe Handling: Our course teaches operators the skills and knowledge needed to safely control the M3’s multidirectional drive system and handle long, awkward loads with confidence.
Narrow Aisle Confidence: Operators gain specific competency in navigating tight spaces with extended loads, maximising efficiency in high-density storage environments where standard reach trucks cannot operate.
Boost Productivity: Proper M3 training reduces errors, speeds up load handling cycles, and improves overall throughput — particularly in operations handling long or non-standard load sizes.
Adherence to Regulations: Our training is fully accredited and conforms to relevant safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
Cost-Effective: Learning the correct care and maintenance methods for your M3 truck will help avoid unexpected breakdowns and reduce the cost of repairs.
